This past Sunday, Joon Community hosted its last Joon Cafe: Mutual Aid Gathering of the summer, filled with coffee, chats around inclusive transportation, and a community give-back project where we filled over 30+ essential bags with necessities to hand out to our unhoused neighbors here in Minneapolis.
I got to moderate an amazing panel with expert leaders in the transit sector here in the Twin Cities, where we talked about the necessity of free transit, why highway expansions hurt our communities, and the difference between being car-free by choice vs. being transit-dependent. It all came down to the fact that greenhouse gas emissions and being car-dependent are due to the systems we have in place, where Big Oil moguls get free rein and public transit gets the short end of the stick when it comes to funding and support.
BUT, Public transit needs to be better and more reliable. We had attendees express their concerns about the inaccuracies of the bus schedules here in the Twin Cities, which makes it really hard to get around. That is why Joon Community is starting to launch a new initiative to sponsor 50+ physical one-day bus passes in ATX to start to share with our unhoused neighbors, working with groups like Austin Bicycle Meals. We also see the gap that folks may not have a digital device to stay on top of transit updates, etc, so we want to help create a physical pamphlet of resources as a solution.
Help us be part of making public transit inclusive and for all. Joon Community is a not-for-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status. All donations are tax-deductible.
FOR EVERYONE:
Our focus needs to be on Gaza right now more than ever, as humanitarians are warning that a mass starvation is spreading. Check out a few immediate resources/CTAs needed below.
Tell Public Pensions: Hold polluters accountable: Once again, America's biggest banks have ramped up their financing of fossil fuel companies worldwide, fueling oil and gas expansion and making the shift to clean energy even harder.
Tell Congress: Support Families Displaced by Climate Disaster
TEXAS:
Texas residents, send in comments regarding the revised congressional redistricting plan here. Check out some comments to add below:
There is no new census data that would call for redistricting; this is all a political grab for more Republican seats.
Drawing district lines based on race is unconstitutional/illegal.
Redistricting would result in less representation for underrepresented groups, which the state is already failing.
The priority of the special session should be on more urgent matters, such as disaster relief.
NYC:
Take Action: Cool Down New York City’s Hot Bus Stops. Every bus stop needs shade and more frequent bus service.
MINNESOTA:
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) intends to remove at-grade boulevard options from consideration for Rethinking I-94.
Take action to keep the Twin Cities Boulevard vision alive.

As a SoCal girlie, seeing this new Metro Airport Station at LAX warms my heart, and I can’t wait to personally get to try it next time I visit my family. For now, check out this video from @ClimateDiva.
